Mpika, 12 June 2025 - The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) deeply regrets to announce a tragic train accident that occurred on 11th June 2025 at approximately 16:00 hours, involving a rescue train dispatched to respond to an earlier derailment along the TAZARA line between Mununga and Kalonje at kilometre 1513, in Zambia.
During rescue operations for the derailed coach of Mukuba Passenger Train No. M22, a collision occurred between the rescue train (Train No. 611) and the derailed passenger coach.
As a result of this tragic sequence of events, one TAZARA employee, Mr. Davy Siwale, lost his life and 30 people sustained injuries, including 10 employees and 19 passengers. All injured individuals were rushed to Mpumba Rural Health Centre and have since been treated and discharged.
TAZARA management, led by Regional General Manager for Zambia Mr. Kambani Ndhlovu, visited the injured and has taken all necessary measures to support the victims and their families during this difficult time.
A full investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the deceased, and we extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured.
